There’s no denying that New York comes alive in the summer. From the live music, stunning walks in Central Park, kayaking along the Hudson River and private sightseeing tours, there is truly something for everyone.
But with so many things to do, you might find yourself feeling a little overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the best activities for you. But not to worry! We have compiled a list of 5 of the top fun things to do in NYC, to help narrow down your choices.
Here are 5 fun things you can do this summer in New York:
- Explore Central Park
- Visit Governors Island
- Visit Little Island (The Floating Park)
- Go Kayaking on the Hudson River & East River
- Book a Private Tour
1. Explore Central Park
Exploring Central Park should definitely be top of the bucket list when visiting New York this summer as it has something for all ages.
Popular attractions include a guided horse & carriage, cycling tours, central park zoo, playgrounds and running tours. Other activities that might be of interest include walking, yoga, solo running or even a relaxing picnic on the grass with your friends. Whoever you’re with, whatever your interests, there will be something for you to do in Central Park.
2. Visit Governors Island
If you’re looking for a cheap escape from the city then taking a trip to Governors Island is a must. Costing only $4 to reach by ferry, this car-free Island has something for everyone. For a chilled vibe you can sit and enjoy the famous view of the Statue of Liberty and watch the city of New York in peace. For something more adventurous you can go running, cycling, walking and birding through the beautiful green space on the island.
On hot sunny days, there is free kayaking available at Pier 101 and 102 (the Island’s kayak dock). The Downtown Boathouse also offers free kayaking on Saturdays from mid-June to the end of September.
3. Visit Little Island (The Floating Park)
Little Island is one of the newest attractions in the city and is something quite special: a floating park on 132 unique tulip-shaped concrete stilts in the Hudson River… not something you see often! This stunning green oasis can be reached via two trails: the North Bridge and South Bridge, both located on the Hudson River Greenway.
When walking around the park, you’ll encounter approximately 35 different types of trees, 65 types of shrubs and a few hundred other types of plants. What’s more, there are numerous hiking trails that lead to the highest points on the island, offering beautiful views of Manhattan, New Jersey and the surrounding river.
As well as the beautiful views, you can enjoy various music events and art exhibitions on the island. It isn’t one to miss! Check out the Little Island event calendar here for more information.
4. Go Kayaking on the Hudson River & East River
If discovering New York on land wasn’t enough, why not discover it from the water? Even better… from a kayak! Kayaking on the Hudson River & East River is a super cool event that can be booked several times a month, starting at the Manhattan Community Boathouse or at the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The Hudson River is home to a wide variety of beautiful wildlife, including birds, fish, and even occasional dolphin sightings, so kayaking allows you the opportunity to observe and connect with nature while being surrounded by the cityscape.
