5 Of The Most Iconic Sites In Downtown Manhattan

The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. Whatever you call New York City there’s little doubt that it’s one of the most iconic metropolises in the world. It’s a city that has featured in countless movies and TV shows, which makes it a popular destination for tourists.

But with so many incredible sights in New York, it can be difficult to know where to begin. If you have a specific interest, or simply want to see the best the city has to offer without hordes of other people, a private New York tour is the way to go.

There are many parts of the city that you’ll likely want to explore, but we’ve pulled together five of the most iconic sights in downtown Manhattan. These aren’t to be missed while you’re exploring the Big Apple.

1. 9/11 Memorial & Museum

Most of us can remember exactly what we were doing on 9/11 2001 and so the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is an essential stop on any tour of downtown Manhattan. The memorial itself is located on the site of the twin towers and is a quiet space for contemplation and reflection.

In the museum, you can learn more about the events of that day, as well as uncover some of the stories of those who were caught up in the terrorist attack that changed the world.

    2. The Battery

This park is located at the southern tip of Manhattan, but it is far more than just a green space to enjoy. The park itself is dotted with monuments that tell the story of New York’s fascinating past. Follow the monument trail with your knowledgeable private guide to uncover some hidden gems.

Among the statues you’ll discover are the coastguard memorial, the battery canon and the Fort George memorial tablet. Of course, the Battery is also famous for being where you can take the ferry to see the iconic Statue of Liberty. So, don’t miss your opportunity to get out on the water and get a view of this unique landmark.

      3. The Whitney Museum of American Art

If you’re an art lover then the Whitney Museum of American Art needs to be on your tour of downtown Manhattan. This establishment houses over 26,000 pieces of art, produced by contemporary American artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Among the artists whose pieces feature in its collections are Gretchen Andrew, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez and Keith Mayerson, among many others. The gallery focuses on showcasing pieces by living artists, so this could also present an opportunity to uncover a new favourite artist.

Make sure you check out what exhibitions will be on during your visit so that you can plan accordingly. The gallery’s entire collection is also available to view online, so you can decide ahead of time if there are any pieces you’d like your guide to make a beeline for once you’re in the museum.

        4. Mott Street

Mott Street is at the beating heart of Manhattan’s Chinatown and it’s a must-visit if you’re exploring the downtown area. Many of the original buildings still stand, giving you a glimpse into how the early Chinese immigrant community lived in New York.

Among the highlights as you stroll are some of the oldest Chinese businesses in the city and the Church of Transfiguration, which dates from 1801. As you stroll around Chinatown, get your guide to point out the original tenement buildings. Many have been restored but still offer an insight into this aspect of New York’s heritage.

          5. The Seaport

This is another iconic New York neighbourhood and one that is well worth exploring. It is actually the oldest waterfront neighbourhood in the city and while it is home to plenty of modern businesses, you can still enjoy its historic atmosphere thanks to cobbled streets and fascinating architecture.

The Seaport is a brilliant place to stop for lunch or a coffee, with a selection of eateries offering everything from delicious baked goods to fine dining, three-course meals. If you’re there a bit later in the day, there are also stylish bars you can visit – make sure you order a Manhattan while you’re there.

It is also a good location to visit if you want to get a good view of Brooklyn Bridge, which has provided a river crossing in the city since it was constructed in the 19th century.

New York, and downtown Manhattan, has plenty more to offer, which is why a private guided tour of the city is the best way to ensure that you see all the sights you want while uncovering hidden gems along the way.
